signed with the artist's initials F.E.C., l.r. oil on canvas Painted circa 1868-69. According to Gerald L. Carr, the present work relates to two frescos Church completed in Rome in January 1869. One, mounted on a wood frame, is in the collection at Olana, the other, painted directly on a studio wall, is presumably lost. Thomas McLean was Church's dealer in London at the time.
