Description: FRIES, LAURENT. [Ptolemaic World.] Double-page woodblock map. 15 1/2x19 3/4 inches sheet size, wide margins; ink inscription on verso, several expertly repaired wormholes lower margin. A handsome and very collectable example. Lyons: Melchior and Gaspar Treschel, 1535

Notes: The ancient world in a traditional Ptolemaic projection surrounded by 12 wind-heads; Waldseemuller''s map of 1513 redrawn and reduced. Called rare by Shirley as the editor of the Lyons edition of the Geographicae, Michael Servetus, was charged with heresy by John Calvin in 1553 and ordered to be burned at the stake atop a pyre of his own books. Shirley 47.
