Description: Galilei, Galileo. DIALOGO DI GALILEO GALILEI LINCEO MATEMATICO SOPRAORDINARIO DELLO STUDIO DI PISA … SOPRA I DUE MASSIMI SISTEMI DEL MONDO TOLEMAICO, E COPERNICANO. Florence: Batista Landini, 1632. 4to (220 x 160mm.) pi4, A-2E8, 2F6, 2G-2K4 (or [8], 458, [34] pp.) Wanting additional engraved title, else complete with final blank present (2K4); the cancel slip (correcting a marginal footnote for pg. 92) is present on page 92. Numerous woodcut diagrams in-text. Bound in later 1/2 vellum over decorative paper boards, title on spine in gilt. Vellum toned and soiled, front board with stain and chip, some loss to edges (particularly at corners), pastedown with shadow (from removal of a former owner's bookplate). *** Overall, the contents are Very Good though presenting the following flaws *** : Early ink inscription to title, title with printing error filled in with early manuscript (see just above the printer's woodcut, then to the left) and one small paper repair, approximately first 45 pages with a worm-track near upper margin (larger at front and dissipating thereafter, approx. 18 pages with said track touching text but with very minor loss, most of the worm holes with old paper repairs), second leaf with small hole removing one letter, 3 or 4 instances of marginal chips (i.e. not approaching or removing text), pages 3 - 33 with old faded water-stain to lower inner corner (marginal, approaching but not touching text), leaf L8 with small marginal note in early ink, two leaves with short closed marginal tears, some leaves with tanning while most quite clean. Overall a Very Good example of an extremely scarce book. ************************************************* First edition of this very important and scarce work by Galileo. It was the present work in which Galileo established the Copernican theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun (as opposed to the opposite view.) At the time, this idea was considered heretical, and Galileo was prosecuted and forced to recant his theory. The book was suppressed by the Inquisition in 1633 and few copies survive today. Provenance: from a private collection; Please review photo of title-page inscription. [PMM 128; Grolier 18C; Riccardi I 512]
