Description: 1st-4th century AD. A carved schist youthful head of Buddha with top-knot and urna to the brow; mounted on a custom-made stand. See The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession number 13.96.4, for a similar example. 17 kg, 37.5cm (14 3/4"). Property of a European collector living in London; acquired before 2000. The features of the Buddha, the subdued smile, straight, well proportioned nose, and the full almond shaped eyes are meant to impart an expression of spirituality. Such images were not only used for devotional practice but were also symbols of the ideal state to be achieved through individual thoughtfulness.

Condition Report: Very fine condition.
