Description: 2nd-3rd century AD. A schist frieze panel depicting the Buddha seated in a shrine with domed top; Buddha sat cross-legged on a throne, hands in lap and wearing lose monastic robes; hair pulled up into a top knot; dome of building supported by columns; in shrine to left is seated figure of Maitreya with legs crossed at ankles in the 'European style', hands in teaching mudra; mounted on a custom-made stand. 6.2 kg, 24cm including stand (9 1/2"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1990s.
