Description: 2nd-4th century AD. A schist panel with the Buddha seated in the centre under a flowering tree, hair pulled into a top knot, urna between the eyebrows, elongated ears, large halo behind head and wearing long monastic robes; left hand holding robes and right held up in blessing; to either side groups of male figures in robes and loin cloths in various animated poses; to the base a register with seven figures gesticulating to the Buddha and with vine leaves running above. 54 kg, 47.5cm (18 3/4"). From an important London collection, acquired in the 1990s.
