Painting with ink and some colors on silk. Japan, dated 1799
Steep rocky cliffs, gorge-like valley with a narrow path, rustic footbridge and a hut hidden under trees. In front are standing two literati, who look up to a man in the cabin. On the bridge, their servant boy balances a load. This painting is inspired by Chinese Shanshui presenting romantic landscape, in which once the literati class retreated. At the upper left, the period Kansei and cycle year, as well as signature KA-KAN-DO 可 観 堂 GAN-KU 岸 駒, below is a red seal Ganku Funzen. Ganku was the founder of the Kishi School (Kishi another reading of Gan in Ganku), who received two years before his death the honorary title Echizen no Kami. Kakando is one of his artist names, Funzen an alternative name. The picture has a very good mounting with cultivated silk brocade, black lacquer rollers, altogether very good condition.
