Such flat hammered gold bands set with an oval intaglio, probably symbolic to the wearer, were fashionable in ancient Roman times in the 1st century AD. A reddish agate is incised on its oval table with a profile bust of a warrior wearing a prominent laurel wreath (or possibly a Diadoumenos, a youthful figure with a ribbon wrapped around his head).
