Drawings by Gaudenzio are extremely rare, and his style is generally associated with more finished drawings, executed either in black chalk or with the point of the brush, heightened with white, on blue paper. The present drawing is, however, identical in style to another study of The Holy Family, in pen and ink, in the Biblioteca Reale, Turin (see Gaudenzio Ferrari, exh. cat., Vercelli, Museo Borgogna, 1956, fig.100).
