Lot 3: Gemstone Ring: NO RESERVE
November 30, 2016
Boston, MA, USALive Auction
Description: Sold without reserve.
Electrum rings, made from an alloy of gold and silver, were widespread across medieval Europe and the Mediterranean. The shape and central emerald of this ring recalls earlier Byzantine rings which were often surrounded by small pearls. The flat hoop supports an octagonal - almost star- shaped bezel of irregular shape which holds a natural-shaped emerald with its faceted edges. The stone is kept in place by three claws and framed by twisted wire. The surface of the large bezel has ornamental wire circles simulating wires.
