Condition Note: including: military commissions, signed by George II, George III (15), and William IV (2); several documents relating to the Order of the Bath conferred upon Major General Sir Kenneth Alexander Howard in 1815, including a letter and watercolour design of the award by George Naylor, York Herald, and letters signed by George IV (one as Prince Regent and Sidmouth); a certificate signed by Palmerston (1827); and other subsequent commissions relating chiefly to the Lord Lieutenancy of West Yorkshire, c.35 items in all, on vellum and papers, in large album bound in calf gilt (c.20 x 19 inches, 51 x 48cm.), 1737-1897, some measure of spotting and soiling, covers damp-stained, joints repaired
CATALOGUE NOTE
The Howard family, Barons and Earls of Effingham, has a long tradition of military, as well as political, service. The General Kenneth Howard, first Earl of the second creation (1767-1845), served with distinction in the Peninsular War and was Deputy Earl-Marshal at the coronation of George IV.
