GEORGE III PIANOFORTE.
Marked for John Broadwood, London, late 18th century, mahogany. Hepplewhite case with good inlay consisting of banding and stringing. Original French frame stand is made to disassemble. Ivory and ebony keyboard with sixty-eight keys in 5 1/2 octaves. Inlaid satinwood and holly name plate with worn label "John Broadwood & Son, fecit…" Good original condition with pinboard numbered "No. 9229". Added brass label "From the home of Horace & Adeline Work Battery, grandparents of Alice B. Metcalf". Mechanism is fairly complete with a few missing dampers and splits in sound board. 34"h. 64"w. 22 1/2"d.
In 1793 Broadwood increased his keyboards from 5 1/2 to 6 octaves.
