Notes: Cf. Tingari Dreaming, 1996, in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, in Perkins, H, and Fink, H., Papunya Tula, Genesis and Genius, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 2000, p.121, for a closely related large scale painting using the same palette.
George Tjungurrayi developed the extraordinary, graphically minimal renditions of country associated with the Tingari ancestors around 1996, and this work comes from the first Melbourne exhibition in which he showed this style of painting. The field of narrow parallel lines, which 'warp' towards the opposite edges of the canvas, relates to the designs engraved on shields in the Western Desert, as well as to a conceptualisation of the physical appearance of the country around Lake Mackay with its parallel ridges of sand dunes.
This painting is sold with an accompanying Papunya Tula Artists certificate
