GEORGE TJUNGURRAYI (CIRCA 1937 -)
Tingari Cycle, 1999
synthetic polymer paint on canvas
136 x 266 cm
Provenance: Kimberley Art: Cat. no. KIN0034/6 Private Collection, Vic George Tjungurrayi gained a growing reputation from the mid 1990's as the emerging contemporary art market showed its preference for painterliness and a degree of abstraction. He had by this time largely abandoned the application of distinct dotted brush strokes in favour of more linear effects through the painted surface, as demonstrated in this major work based on Tingari Men's sites in his country, west of Kintore. His stylistic departure from iconic ceremonial origins can be seen as part of a larger movement amongst the Papunya Tula artists at this time. George and Willy Tjungurrayi in common with Ronnie Tjampitjinpa and Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula, had abandoned traditional conventions in conveying the ancient narratives that informed their view of their country.
