During his first visit to this seaside town, Braque painted fifteen landscapes which bore a striking similarity in palette and composition to those he did in L'Estaque the previous year. These landscapes were exhibited in the summer of 1907 at the Salon des Independants in Paris to great acclaim. Braque was so encouraged by the success of the 1907 exhibition that he returned to La Ciotat to continue painting. The present w
