Gerard Hermanz. van HONTHORST (born Utrecht 1592 - died Utrecht 1656) "Portrait of a gentleman in armour-suit, bust-length" Oil on panel, size 74 by 58.8 cm. Gerard Hermansz. van Honthorst, also known as Gerrit van Honthorst and Gherardo della Notte, was a Dutch painter of Utrecht. He was a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert. Honthorst went to Italy from 1616 until 1620, where he copied the naturalism and eccentricities of Miche;angelo da Caravaggio. He set up a school at Utrecht together with his colleague Hendrick ter Brugghen. He represented the so-called Dutch Caravaggisti. The time not consumed in producing pictures was devoted to portraits. Honthorst's works are numerous, and amply represented in English and Continental galleries.
