Description: 5th-6th century AD. A brooch assemblage comprising: a matched pair of radiate-headed bronze bow brooches, each with D-shaped headplate, bird-heads to the outer edge flanking a facing human mask, ribbed bow, leaf-shaped footplate with flanking loops, ring-and-dot motifs, animal-head finial ferrous pin and spring to the reverse with catchplate; a restrung group of oblate glass and stone beads, with spherical centre bead. Cf. Tejral, J. Morava na Sklonku Antiky, Prague, 1982, plate XXI (5) for type. 210 grams total, brooch: 14.5cm (5 3/4"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972.
