Antwerp, (Johannes Meursius for) Theodorus à Tulden, Guilielmus Lesteenius & Henricus Aertssens, (1642). (6) lvs. (incl. engr. ti.), 189 pp., (7) lvs. W. 43 etched/engr. plates by Th. v. Thulden after P.P. Rubens (3 large fold. and 5 fold.), and 48 small engr. prints in text, i.a. depicting emblems in the shape of medals. Lge-fol. Old. limp vellum. (Recent rebacking (w. new vellum, remnants of old spine laid down), upper outer corners repaired, new endpapers, traces of use throughout, some faint browning throughout (espec. on margins), marginal repairs to first and last text leaf (=French ti. & colophon), inner margin last 9 lvs. stained; the following plates face some problems: plate 16 ('Porticus Caesareo Austriaca') rep./laid down/lower margin short/some small tears in lower margin, plate 17 has a brown varnish like stain in the lower half, plate 22 has small repairs on v°-side, outer margin of plate 26 is short, plate 30 w. small rep. and small tears, plate 42 has small repairs on v°-side). Ceremonial entrance of Ferdinand of Austria (1609/10-1641), Cardinal-Infante of Spain and successor to the Infante Isabella, in Antwerp, 1635, executed after designs of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Book and plates were commissioned by the city of Antwerp from Theodoor van Thulden (1606-1669) on May 25th 1635; the text was written by the city secretary Casper Gevaarts (1593-1666). Complete copy of one of the finest books on the subject. The impressive baroque plates include a portrait of Ferdinand by Neeffs after Van Thulden, an engraved equestrian portrait of Ferdinand by Pontius after Rubens, views of and in Antwerp, a large plan of Antwerp, triumphal chariots, arches and other architectural and painted constructions, mostly by Van Thulden after Rubens.
