Bound in full period tree-calf, 4th volume with large chip to spine, others with chips to labels, hinges lightly cracked but all well-intact, some professional repairs to heads and tails (replacing chipped leather), corners and edges with wear. Contents quite clean and bright overall with some instances of light foxing in a few places, two leaves with discrete marginal repairs, five leaves with corner chips (no loss of text), and three leaves with closed marginal tears. A Very Good set. ****************************************** "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in inimitable prose" (PMM 222).
