Estimate: $800 - $1,200

Description: GILLRAY, JAMES. John Bull bother''d;__or__The Geese Alarming the Capitol. Etching and aquatint on wove paper. 13 1/2x16 1/2 inches sheet size, ample margins; light waterstain lower margin, early ink annotation in lower margin recto and verso. London: H. Humphrey, 1792

Notes: Atop a fortified stronghold, a nervous William Pitt spies flocks of Sans-Culottes, Scots and Irish rising up, revolutionaries coming for England; John Bull, a stout countryman with a broken bayonet and the "Rights of Man" in his pocket, sees only the gabbling geese in the distance but still appears quite shaken by Pitt''s excitable assertions. BM Satires 8141.
