Notes: Imaginary landscapes (capricci) such as this one were typical of Panini's output in the 1720s and though he never really ceased to paint such scenes, there appears to have been a renewed interest in this kind of painting in the middle of the century largely due to the increasing demand by Grand Tourists visiting Rome.
The composition evidently enjoyed large popularity for a number of replicas, probably executed in his studio, are known: one, of slightly larger dimensions (101 by 67.5 cm.), was sold in London, Christie's, October 11, 1963, lot 62, another, also oflarger dimensions, was sold, London, Christie's, December 16, 1983, lot 205.
