Collection de Londres, peint dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIème siècle, vraisemblablement d'après une gravure de Philippe Nicolas Milcent
publiée à Paris vers 1730-1740 (voir J. Ingamells, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Pictures, tome I, Londres, 1985, n° P493, reproduit). Cette
hypothèse a été émise en raison du fait que l'Ile de Malte a toujours présenté un grand intérêt pour les français d'un point de vue stratégique,
mais aussi parce que de nombreux Chevaliers de l'Ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem étaient au XVIIIème siècle d'origine française. Ce tableau
proche du nôtre, a été autrefois traditionnellement attribué à Giuseppe Guerra.
Connu comme peintre et restaurateur, Giuseppe Guerra, originaire de Naples, fut l'élève de Francesco Solimena dont il réalisa de nombreuses
reprises au début de sa carrière. Sur l'intervention du père provincial il obtint aux débuts des années 1730, une première importante commande
pour l'église S. Francesco e Antonio à Cava dei Tirreni, et il réalisa entre autres Une Présentation de la Vierge au Temple et une Cène. Il obtient
ensuite de nombreuses commandes dans les milieux de l'Eglise.
