Lot 65: "God's Poultry", Gertrude Rogers
November 12, 2016
Ashburn, VA, USALive Auction
Description: This oil on board work, painted in 1952, depicts 3 pheasants in a snowy yard enclosed by a post fence. The pheasants appear to be foraging on the plants the poke up through the snow. A vine with red berries entwines around the fence behind the birds. Gertrude Rogers, born September 4, 1896, in Ionia, Michigan began her artistic career late in life; although she did not begin her painting activity until 1946, encouragement from her family and support from a Michigan State University professor gave her the determination to press on with her talents. She works in the naïf folk art style, and her subject matter draws heavily from her childhood memories of growing up on a farm. It is signed and framed. Including the frame, the dimensions are 28 1/2 inches wide by 21 inches high. Without the frame the dimensions are 24 inches wide by 16 inches high. All measurements are approximate.
