Description: 5th-6th century AD. A flat-section D-shaped hoop, plaque composed of two large discoid cells set with garnet cloisons, each with circular 'eye', fan-shaped flanking cells with garnet cloisons and two groups of three garnet cabochons. Cf. Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007, item I.34.7 for type. 5.12 grams, 24mm overall, 19.71mm internal diameter (approximate size British T 1/2, USA 9 3/4, Europe 21.89, Japan 21) (1"). Property of a European collector; acquired before 2000. The stone was examined in detail by Dr. Bonewitz who observed: 'The two largest garnets are cut with a ring-and-dot recess. These are the only ancient gemstones I have ever seen cut in this pattern.'
Condition Report: Very fine condition. A large wearable size.
