Description: 5th-3rd century BC. A ceramic blackware lekythos with barrel-shaped body, trumpet-shaped neck and mouth, inturned rim, strap handle to the reverse; vertical strokes to the neck, reserved image of a girl in a peplos dress, sitting, holding a casket in the extended right hand, flanked by scrolled tendrils; Apulian workmanship. 113 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his grandfather in the 1920s; thence by descent.
