Description: Apulian, 4th century BC. A large blackware ceramic vessel with vertical strap handles extending from the shoulder to the underside of the rim; pedestal base, narrow neck, flanged and chamfered mouth; spherical body decorated at the neck with a band of egg-and-dart, palmettes beneath the handles; Side A: a woman advancing in loose flowing robes holding a dish in her right hand and wreath in her left, objects in the field; Side B: a seated woman with mirror and casket, looking over her shoulder; band of meander pattern below. 915 grams, 25.5cm (10"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his grandfather in the 1920s; thence by descent.
