NY: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1886. 1st American edition.The party began mapping on “...Ellesmere Island, explored the north coast of Greenland from Cape Bryant to Cape Washington… extended the mapping of Hayes Sound, about 79 N on Ellesmere... As relief ships failed to reach them… march out of the Hall Basin area, all but seven dying of starvation before rescue…” -Arctic Bibliography 6118. Franklin’s expedition went farther north than any Arctic exploration team had gone before: 83 degrees, 30 minutes North. 54 plates and maps (or 45 illustrated plates and 9 maps), as follows- Vol I: 18 illustrated plates and 5 maps (1 folding, 3 as nonfolding plates, 1 on a leaf with text on other side). Vol II: 27 illustrated plates (2 folding) and 4 maps (1 folding map in rear pocket, 1 other folding map, 1 double-page, 1 on verso of a text leaf). In Vol II, the 2 folding plates are listed as a single plate on plate list. Vol I: xxv, blank [1], 428 pp. Vol II: xii, 444 pp. 8vo. Original blue cloth with red/gilt/silver front cover illustration. Rear hinges cracked. Vol I slightly cocked. Small spot to upper margin of some plates in Vol I. Interiors very good. 7.8 Lb.
