CATALOGUE NOTE
As John Elderfield states "in the late spring and early summer of 1981...the artist achieved a newly condensed style with episodic clusters of imagist drawing set against affirmatively open fields. Parrot Jungle [was] among the finest of these pictures that first manifested it. They look back to the 1950s, even through the 1950s to the sources of that decade's paintings; hence Parrot Jungle bears comparison with a 1951 Frankenthaler that was influenced by paintings of Miró like Person Throwing a Stone at a Bird.
The paintings of 1981 clarify the development of the preceding two years. They are clean, confident, very forthright works - less mobile than those of 1980 but unequivocally direct, more graphic but equally more unconfined."
