Capricci of Roman ruins with figures; the first with an obelisk and the Fountain of Triton, the Basilica of Saint Peter's and the Arch of Drusos beyond ; the second with the Fountain of the Four Rivers and Trajan's column, the Arch of Constantine and Church of S. Maria Nova beyond oil on canvas 195/8 x 263/4 in. (68 x 50 cm.) a pair (2) NOTES In a private communication to the present owner (dated 6 November 2000), Dr. Dario Succi attributes the present pair of architectural capricci to Hendrik Frans van Lint. He cites as typical of the artist's style the minute rendering of the architectural details in the fore and middlegrounds and the preference for small figures in brightly colored costumes that are arranged throughout each painting so as to create a sense of depth in the composition. Dr. Succi also notes the rarity of architectural capricci in the artist's oeuvre, of which the present pair -- datable to the 1760s -- 'costituisce un prezioso esempio'.
