1860-1943 la terrasse de marquayrol signed oil on canvas 78.7 by 106.7 cm., 31 by 42 in. Painted in 1920. The present work portrays the terrace of Martin's summer retreat at Labastide-du-Vert in the Lot region near Cahors. Jacques Martin-Ferrieres, the artist's son, commented: 'My father, rather tired of looking every summer for a summer-place, visited in the Lot a heavy 17th Century house, pompously called ''the manor'' in the village. Stuck on the side of a hill, it overtowered the little village called Labastide-du-Vert and especially the valley whose poplars he was often to paint. Around it lay sixty acres of stony ground which tempted this 'virgilian' man and where he painted his old shepherds with their sheep and their stone huts, the motifs of his first years... The house was named Marquayrol, the etymology of which was certainly 'Mas Cayroux' - the house of pebbles. Charmed by so many subjects to paint, he bought the house. And it may be said that from now on, one third of his life was spent there' (Jacques Martin-Ferrieres, Henri Martin, His Life and Work, Paris, 1967, p. 58). The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Cyrille Martin.
