dated 1910, 1.r. - - oil on canvas16 1/8 x 24 in. (41 x 61 cm.)PROVENANCEKennedy Galleries, Inc., New YorkFarny's fascination with the American Indian began soon after he and his family moved to American from France. Farny's mother, Jeanette, often gave medical treatment to the members of an Onandaigua tribe that lived near the family's home in Western Pennsylvania. While the Farnys soon moved to the more urban Cincinnati, where the artist was to spend most of his life, Farny kept with him a fondness and interest in the Indian culture. The early years of Farny's artistic career were dominated by his association with Harper Brothers. During the years 1865-1893, Farny produced many illustrations to be published in Harper's Weekly and other periodicals. By 1893 Farny was devoting more time to his oils and gouaches, and he felt confident enough to abandon illustrating and concentrate on his serious work. The Trail Over the Pass, painted in 1910, shows Farny's fully mature style. As his work progressed, through the early 1900s, Farny began to separate himself from the illustrational conventions of his earlier work. He began to concentrate more on the place of the Indian in a landscape. It is during this period that the artist produced his most successful and interesting work.
