Description: An Afternoon by the River signed and dated 'Towneley Green 1866' (lower left) pencil and watercolour, heightened with bodycolour and gum arabic, and with scratching out 9.3/8 x 13.3/8 in. (23.9 x 34 cm.) NOTES Henry Towneley Green was the brother of Charles Green, who established a considerable reputation as an illustrator for the Graphic. Both brothers contributed to Once a Week, and the Cornhill Magazine, whose first editor was Thackeray and who numbered Millais and Leighton amongst its regular contributors. Green exhibited his watercolours between 1855 and 1893 at the Royal Academy and the New Watercolour Society. Examples of his work can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
