Title: Pia Desideria: or, Divine Addresses, in Three Books.
Author: Herman Hugo - Herman Hugo was a Jesuit priest, writer and military chaplain. His "Pia Desideria," a spiritual emblem book published in Antwerp in 1624, was "the most popular religious emblem book of the seventeenth century". It went through 42 Latin editions and was widely translated up to the 18th century (Daly, "Companion to Emblem Studies," p. 106)

Condition / Notes: This antique, full-leather volume with five raised bands has a separated front board. The covers display blind-stamped ornamentation. The volume shows significant external wear, with rubbing, darkened spine, and cracking to the spine edges. The rear hinge is cracked. The text block is adorned with gilt edges. The work is ornamented with marbled endpapers, and two bookplates appear on the front endpaper. The interior is bright, with scattered offsetting and occasional edge wear. The work is richly illustrated with engraved plates. A note is present on the last page of text, stating that the book was read on Easter Day of what appears to be 1696.
