Description: HILLS, R. Sketches in Flanders and Holland; with some account of a tour through parts of those countries, shortly after the battle of Waterloo; in a series of letters to a friend. Lond., J. Haines & J. Turner, 1816. viii, 215 pp. W. 36 aquatint plates (5 cold., 1 fold.). Early 20th c. h. mor. (signed Morrell), w. raised bands, back gilt & all edges gilt. (Slightly browned in places, but else a splendid copy). Only book written by the painter and engraver Robert Hills (1769-1844), rather appreciated in his time and one of the founders of the Society of Painters in Watercolors. With views of i.a. Bruges, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Amsterdam. These plates are the work of J.C. Stadler, a German working in London. - Abbey, Travel, 187; Atlas van Stolk, 5893; Jacobsen Jensen, 247; Landwehr, Bks w. cold. plates, 311.
