Lot 375: Howard Chandler Christy, American (1873-1952)
October 19, 2016
Closter, NJ, USALive Auction
Description: Stunning art deco sculpture on original marble base. Incised on metal base "Miss America (copyright symbol) 1925, Howard Chandler Christy" Howard Chandler Christy was a former Miss America Pageant judge and illustrator. He sculpted the smiling nude beauty and unveiled it in 1925. Some thought this sculpture was based on the artist's personal knowledge of the physique of that year's pageant winner, Miss Fay Lanphier. Christy later stated that she never posed for him but it seems there was outrage nonetheless. Another story claims that Christy was commissioned by pageant officials to create a sculpture to be awarded Oscar-style at the pageant in Atlantic City, NJ. The figure is most likely bronze over plaster (galvno). Height: 15 3/4", Width: 4 3/4", Depth: 4 1/4" (nude, figure, fine art, figurine, gotham art bronze inc) STERLING ASSOCIATES STRIVES TO PROVIDE ACCURATE, OBJECTIVE, & FAIR INFORMATION ON ALL LOTS.
