Prague 1, Czech RepublicLive Auction
Ink painting on paper. Hanging scroll, brocade mounting.Inscribed with seven-syllable quatrain in the upper left corner, which talks about a lonely man in a small hut, living high in the green mountains wreathed in clouds. Signed: Hu Peiheng. Two negative seals: Leng'an, Hu Peiheng. Hu Peiheng was active his entire life on the Beijing art scene. He espoused the legacy of Dong Qichang (1555-1636); however, he created his own personal style appropriate to his time. In this painting, he uses a wide range of ink shades. He painted the mountain masses with a relatively dry brush, but the contours and details were executed with thick ink, giving an overall smooth impression. The scene is very personal - right in the centre of the composition he depicts a man in a humble abode with a garden amidst massive mountain peaks.
