Description: HUBER (J. dit Voltaire) et D. Vivant DENON. Suite de portraits de Voltaire. Tirages du XIXe siècle, préservés dans un étui-chemise en demi-chagrin rouge, dos à nerfs orné moderne.
Suite de portraits de Voltaire d'après le caricaturiste suisse Huber, un intime du philosophe. Cette suite contient 34 gravures de format 14 x 20 cm. Ces gravures, d'abord exécutées par Denon, qui montrent Voltaire dans des coiffures extravagantes et souvent grotesques déplurent à Ferney. Le premier tirage n'a paru qu'après la mort de Voltaire. Il existe plusieurs tirages de ces portraits, généralement groupés sur la même page. Desnoireterre. Iconographie voltairienne pp. 84-85 mentionne un tirage de « cinquante portraits qui ne sont autre que ces diverses têtes tirées à part chacune. B. N. Estampes N. A. 57 (...) Cet ensemble, dont Renouard a possédé les croquis originaux n'a été tiré qu'à quarante exemplaires in-4 ». Desnoireterre ne dit pas qui est le graveur ni la date de ce tirage. Nous n'avons pu déterminer si nos 34 portraits appartiennent à cette suite. Joint : un portrait de Voltaire d'après Huber gravé par Villeret et 2 autres portraits de Voltaire d'après Huber de la fin du XIXe siècle tirés par Cadart. Pas dans Fonds Français.
