Provenance: private Florida collection.
This painting is a wonderful example of the most recognizable Hughie Lee-Smith subject, a solitary figure in an urban scene, made when the artist was at his mid-career height. In 1957, Hughie Lee-Smith left Detroit after winning the Emily Lowe award and moved to New York City. He signed on with Petitte Gallery and later Janet Nassler Gallery. He first lived in the East Village, and began teaching in Princeton, NJ. Other well-known works from this year are Reflection and Woman by the Seashore.
