More About this Item

Description: 1840s LONDON. Shares of £25. black. No 84. Central fold. A suspension footbridge designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opening in 1845. It was named after the then Hungerford Market at Charing Cross, because it went from the South Bank to Hungerford Market on the north side of the Thames. In 1859 the bridge was bought by the railway company extending the South Eastern Railway into the newly opened Charing Cross railway station and a new bridge, suitable for trains, was built. Today, the Hungerford Railway Bridge lies between Waterloo Bridgeand Westminster Bridge, also known as Charing Cross Bridge. First time in our auctions.
