Japan, Yamagata Prefecture (northern Honshu), mid to late 20th century CE. An amazing chisel-done carving in the sasano-bori style, a unique form of folk craft. The art is made using a special kind of chisel; the wood is left curled like the natural form of bird feathers. The peacock sits on a round stump, with an elaborately spread tail, painted light green, with red, dark green, blue, and gold eyes. The body of the peacock is the same dark blue. Size: 7.75" W x 8.5" H (19.7 cm x 21.6 cm)
