Description: Eymerich, Nicolaus. DIRECTORIUM INQUISITORUM [WITH THE COMMENTARY OF FRANCISCO PEGNA]. Rome: Populi Romani, 1578-1579. 2 parts in one volume. 12" x 8". , 399, , 287, , 164,  pp. Note: Prelims lacking 2 leaves of errata, and leaves C2 and C3 are switched and bound in each others place. Adorned with woodcut initials throughout and with large woodcut printer's devices to title and final leaf verso. Contemporary full vellum over boards with title on spine in manuscript. Loss near base of spine, boards bowed, some light cracking along hinges, with typical toning to spine and light soiling/staining. Ink-stamps to pastedown and first two leaves, section near front of book with paper repairs to lower/inner corner (no loss but just touching text in a few instances), Some scattered foxing in places throughout, some marginal worming (mostly small, minor), approx. 100 pages with dampstain near upper margin (refer to photos), some leaves browned/tanned in places throughout. Good. ************************************ First revised edition with the Pegna commentary. Composed in the 14th century and first published in 1503, this infamous manual for inquisitors describes heretics and their beliefs, witchcraft, banned books, and legal processes for trials and torture. The second part of the book is comprised of various papal letters regarding the Inquisition. We locate no previous auction appearance for the present edition. Quite scarce.
