Description: A two-tone Empire-style musical box of museum quality with a miniature portrait of Hortense de Beauharnais, Queen of Holland and stepdaughter of Napoleon Bonaparte Case: 18K gold, signed "Piguet à Paris, 1819" and "Chaponnier, 1817", worn tax mark. Engine-turned base with geometrical pattern of pearls and circles in the centre. Lid with glazed rectangular half-length portrait painted on ivory; framed by a chased border of stylized tulips. Exquisite portrait of a young Hortense de Beauharnais in a white empire-style dress and blue robe trimmed with lynx : Hortense is wearing a pearl necklace and a circlet in herelaborately styled hair, her arm rests on the back of a red armchair. The painting is signed on the left side: "Chaponnier, 1817". Two slides on the right long side: left slide to change the tune, right slide to activate the musical movement. The second tune has a slower tempo, which is why the box has a mechanism that changes the tempo as soon as the second tune is played. Opening with winding arbor in the base plate. Movm.: high quality musical movement, rectangular shape, brass, pin cylinder, vibrating reeds, two-arm centrifugal brake, signature on the comb: "Golay, rue du Coq No 6 Paris, 1817". Hortense Eugénie Cécile Bonaparte, née de Beauharnais (1783-1837) Hortense was Queen of Holland and mother of Emperor Napoleon III. She was granted the title of Duchess of Saint Leu after the Bourbon Restoration. Hortense was the daughter of Alexandre, Vicomte de Beauharnais and JoséphineTascher de la Pagerie. After the execution of her father during the reign of terror 1794 and her mother's remarriage in 1796 she became the stepdaugther of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1802 Hortense was wedded to Napoleon's younger brother Louis Bonaparte, who became King of Holland in 1806. Her mother Josephine strongly encouraged the marriage because her own marriage to Napoleon had remained childless and she had hopes that a son of her daughter might become Napoleon's heir. Hortense had three sons during her marriage. Source: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hortense_de_Beauharnais, as of 09/30/2013 Alexandre Chaponnier (also Chaponniere; Geneva 1753-1850) Chaponnier was a well-known Franco-Swiss engraver, painter and miniaturist. At a young age he traveled to Paris to study the art of engraving. He was mainly active as a reproductive artist, making copper engravings after Jacques-AntoineArlaud, Jean-Baptiste Regnault, Van Spaendonck, John Opie, Jean-Baptiste Huet, Jean-Simon Fournier and Louis Leopold Boilly. As portrait miniaturist, Alexandre Chaponnier was known until today as the author of one portrait housed in Museum Carnavalet in Paris. Louis Golay Golay came to Paris from Geneva, he had a shop at Quai aux Fleurs between 1815 and 1817 and apparently moved to the Rue du Coq later. He called himself horologer-mechanicien, specializing in fitting musical mechanisms to clocks, snuff boxes and singing bird boxes. Possibly he represented Henri Golay's Paris branch.
