Description: Circa 6th-7th century AD
The cast gold ring, with a collet of beaded wire, is set with a fine Egyptian emerald. The Romans and Byzantines left the emerald in its natural shape and only polished the surface. The central stone is surrounded by a thin wire threaded through loops and strung with seed pearls. The substantial bezel is pyramid shaped which was a popular form in that period.
