Notes: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION
The present lot underscores Aivazovsky's talent for depicting the atmospheric qualities of the treacherous sea and man's struggle against nature. The sky appears heavy as the inclement weather approaches, and the angry waves fade from blue to white as they build upon one another, taunting the vulnerable ship and the men aboard. Ship in a Stormy Sea off the Coast once hung in the Winter Palace as part of the collection of Tsar Nicholas II, and it was later acquired by Armand Hammer. This lot is accompanied by correspondence from the Tretyakov Gallery and the Theodosia Gallery regarding its great importance.
