Ferdinand Preiss (1882-1943)

Johann Philipp Ferdinand Preiss was born in Hesse in 1882. At the age of 15 he started an apprenticeship with the ivory carver Philipp Willmann. In 1901 he travelled to Rome, Milan as well as Paris and worked as a modeler. Back in Germany he met Arthur Kassler and together they founded the company Preiss & Kassler in Berlin. The manufactory produced small ivory statuettes and so-called chryselephantine sculptures combining ivory and gilded bronze. The production of these Art Deco sculptures reached a peak during the 1920s, the company exported to England and the United States. Today Ferdinand Preiss is one of the leading ivory carvers of the Art Deco period. His chryselephantine sculptures are extremely coveted amongst collectors fetching high prices at auction.
