A 12-BORE 1863 PATENT (SECOND PATTERN) THUMBHOLE-UNDERLEVER DOUBLE-BARRELLED BAR-IN-WOOD HAMMERGUN, no. 8664,
31in. nitro reproved fine damascus barrels, rib engraved ''J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.'', and ''1'', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks with dolphin hammers, incorporating J. Purdey 1863 patent thumbhole underlever (second pattern) and Purdey 1863 double bite, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863, and Purdey patent trigger-blocking safety mechanism, patent No. 3118 of 28th November 1870, border and fine acanthus scroll engraving, the top-strap and bar knuckle with ovals engraved ''PATENT'' and ''PURDEY PATENT'' respectively, the bifurcated triggerguard with ''PATENT SAFETY'', retaining traces of original colour-hardening, 14 3/4in. highly-figured stock including 1/2in. buttplate, weight 7lb. 3oz., in a re-lined brass-mounted oak case


Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1872 as No.1 of a pair of 12-bore "bar snap" guns with 31in. barrels, and sold to Sir Thos. Aldy
