Jack Bush was a member of Painter's Eleven, a group founded in 1954 to promote abstract painting in Canada. In the late 1940s, he had begun experimenting with abstraction. In 1950, he first visited the Museum of Modern Art in New York and, after seeing firsthand the work of the Abstract Expressionists, became instrumental in the development of abstract painting in Canada.
