JAMES BARD (American, 1815-1897) PORTRAIT OF THE SIDE WHEELER "TROY". Oil on canvas portrait of the side wheeler "Troy" sailing right to left having two tall black smoke stacks, American flag at center mast, ships banner/flag off stern and a blue and white star flag off front mast. There are approximately seventy-three people on the decks and this is believed to be the largest number of passengers ever painted on a Bard ship! The name emblazoned on the side wheel cover. It sails along grayish/blue water with white wave caps against a magnificent depiction of the lower Hudson Palisades showing stepped cliffs with trees and tree lined grass banks. Unsigned. REFERENCE: The Troy was built in Brooklyn, New York of wood and was 724 tons. It was built by William Capes for Old Line, later Troy Line. It was used as the day boat between New York, Albany and Troy. In 1848 it was altered to night boat for Troy Line between New York and Troy. Broken up at Key Port, N.J. in 1859. NOTE: Accompanying lot is a copy of a three-page letter from Anthony Peluso dated January 29, 1985 regarding the authenticity and his belief that this is the work by James Bard. Housed in a reproduction gilt molded wood frame which is appropriate for the work. SIZE: 30" x 52". CONDITION: Relined, restored with scattered inpainting. 9-72258
