Description: James Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917) American. Portrait of a Man, believed to be John Singer Sargent, looking to the left with the sunlight coming from behind, Oil on Canvas, Signed and Dated December 19th '74 and later inscribed, top right, JS Sargent, verso portrait of a man with a moustache, Oil on Canvas, 12.5" x 9" . This was painted in 1874 when Beckwith and Sargent were both painting in the Carolus Studio in France. We are very grateful to Richard Ormond who helped us catalogue this painting after seeing it in the flesh.
