THORNHILL, EVENING certified and dated "about 1916" by Thoreau MacDonald on the reverse oil on board 15.2 by 20.3 cm. 6 by 8 in. In 1913, MacDonald moved to Thornhill, then a rural village seven miles north of Toronto. Shortly after, other future members of the Group of Seven -- Varley, Lismer, Johnston and Carmichael -- joined him there. Thornhill provided subjects for many fine sketches and canvases, including The Tangled Garden.
